Things That Help Combat Depression and Anxiety

DIET~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~supplements~

What: fish oil supplements
Why: They contain 360mg of Omega-3 which is clinically proven to help combat depression.

What: St. John’s Wort supplement
Why: has historically been proven to combat depression super effectively (note: check with your doctor because it could interfere with your meds! this includes non-mental meds, like birth control)

What: gingko biloba supplements
Why: improves brain function/circulation

What: Licorice
Why: It’s a super powerful anti depressant (dont take if you have high blood pressure)

~foods~

What: bananas! a banana a day! orrr broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, peas, pinto beans, asparagus etc other foods that you probs wont eat regularly lol
Why: has B vitamins which help your neurotransmitters function at a high level and improve nerve cell communication (note: this is usually for types of depression that are caused by this imbalance)

What: Sunflower seeds, soy beans (try eating your cereal with soy milk!), black beans, eggs
Why: They contain phenalylalanine which increases dopamine and norepinepherene production in the brain

What: foods with tryptophan like peanuts, soy products, tuna, salmon, fish in general, dark chocolate
Why: helps produce seratonin which helps with sleep problems, depression and low self esteem

 ~teas
~

What: Ginger herbal tea, rosemary tea (or extract)
Why: ginger is traditionally used to help with depression. Rosemary contains cineole, which helps stimulate the nervous system.

What: Chamomile herbal tea
Why: Calms anxiety and eases stress. Calming effect and soothes the nervous system. Most people drink it before bed.

What: Ginseng herbal tea
Why: It has EVERYTHING good in it (seratonin, all most of those other long words I mentioned)

Note: if you buy these teas, make sure it’s the real herb, not some artificial flavoring of black tea! Yogi is a really great brand for herbal teas.

ENVIRONMENT~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What: lavender oil
Why: lifts your mood, helps you be calm. I sprinkle it on my bed once a week.

What: ylang ylang oil
Why: used to treat depression, consoles the heart

What: geranium oil
Why: relaxant. uplifts spirit

What: Myrrh incense and Frankincense incense
Why: They both cleanse the environments, and contribute to your emotional wellbeing. I know my mom uses frankincense for spiritual cleansing, and I use myrrh because it makes me feel comforted and still. You should DEF get these incense. they’re cheap on amazon.

What: completely clean your room or house. I mean thoroughly. Vacuum/sweep every corner. Wipe/dust down every surface. Then re-decorate your room. Put art on your wall that inspires you, and comforts you. If you want, paint your walls a color that contributes to your peace of mind (avoid colors typically associated with negative emotions/experiences). Make photographs of those you care for visible on the wall, or in frames. Put semi-sheer curtains on your windows that allow light to come through. Open your blinds!
Why: a calm, clean, comforting home is good for the soul/mind.

What: introduce more uplifting music into your life.
Why: because it’s good for you (and uplifting music raises your vibrations; sound is powerful! crystals’ energies are often cleansed using bells or tuning forks)

Note: Oils often have a high potency, so avoid use directly on skin, unless diluted with other neutralizing oils (like almond or olive) and/or water. Do your research to get more in depth info on mixing essential oils!

SPIRITUAL~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What: Meditation, at least 10 minutes per day
Why: with dedication and practice, it helps you gain control of your thoughts. Over time, you can retreat to your inner place anywhere, which is really useful.

What: blue lace agate stones
Why: helps find the inner love within yourself that heals and transforms all wounds. useful when working on the inner self. (I personally use blue lace agate, it’s my favorite)

What: Amethyst crystals
Why: It is considered a master healing stone. It does SO MUCH. But primarily it is used to help with transformation, and centering yourself.

note: crystals/stones that can must be cleansed after every session by running under cool water (if cleansing in sink, imagine it being a cool running brook/stream). using a tuning fork or bells is great too, esp. for crystals/stones that cannot come in contact with water. Depending on the type, they are recharged in sunlight, moonlight, or sometimes soil. The two mentioned can be recharged in sunlight.

As always, speak to your psychiatrist/doctor first, let them know about any supplements and dietary changes, and continue taking whatever meds you need. This is not a magical list of cures; they are aids to work in conjunction with whatever it is you already do for yourself.
